Maori carvings...

Week 5 found us in New Zealand. Beautiful countryside. There was a recent large earthquake in Christchurch which we read about. The kids decided to do a Maori carving of some sort. Since I didn't have any proper carving knives or soft wood, I decided to pick up two bars of all purpose soap. It was a good color come to find out, but I wished I could have left it out for a while to help it dry out more (like 6 months, lol). Harder soap would have been a little easier to work with.

They researched Maori carvings, decided on a pattern or design of some sort and went to town on those bars of soap. This was their final creation. Interesting, but then again, so are Maori carvings! We may try this again as they had fun carving, but I'd like to find a tool kit to help them along. I'm going to go get some bars and leave them unwrapped on the counter for a few months to help them harden.
