Nestle Toll House Cookie Dough....E Coli! Really...that's just plain gross!!!!! Another reason to make it from scratch...did you know you can freeze your dough if you do double batches?! I just make little sliced rounds or mounded rounds. Pull out what you want to bake, allow to thaw (in fridge!) and cook as normal.

If you haven't heard....

I am one who doesn't watch a lot of news...the depressing parts far outweigh any positives on there so I just read stuff instead...
Anyways. Recalls once again are being announced...this time for chocolate! How can you mess up chocolate. Well, it seems that good ol China is at it again with Melamine. First our pets, then babies formula, now milk chocolate products.
Here's a list of things not to buy including those Gold Pirate Coins that are popular with kids.

The latest additions to the Singapore list are two flavors of Dutch Lady bottled sterilized milk; Silang House of Steamed Potato's potato crackers; and two flavors of Xu Fu Ji's puffed rice rolls. They join Dutch Lady strawberry- flavored sterilized milk, a Yili yogurt-flavored ice bar, and White Rabbit Creamy Candy. In the EU, all Chinese products containing more than 15 per cent milk, or where the percentage of milk content cannot be established, are being examined for melamine. French authorities have gone a step further, requiring that all products containing Chinese dairy ingredients are withdrawn from sale. And finally, a veritable trove of information on China and its melamine products are listed here

I have been working on buying local as much as we can. Seems we have some great Local US chocolatiers:

These are the ones that I am aware of. Now of course the good ol US has to import Cocoa, but from what I understand these companies are pretty stringent about their products and they are made here instead of farmed out to cheaper paid work forces. I'm all about keeping our funds here for our workers instead of companies farming work out to overseas people.

Here's another one....
A recall on meats and food. Man am I glad that we are really growing much of what we eat. I am sick to death of recall's and there is no reason for it. Someone is just dropping the ball.

For anyone that shops at Sam's....
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (AP) -- The Sam's Club warehouse chain has pulled a brand of ground beef patties from its shelves nationwide after four children who ate the food, produced by Cargill Inc., developed E. coli illness.
Cargill on Friday asked customers to return any remaining patties purchased after August 26 to the store or destroy them. The children became ill between September 10 and September 20 after eating ground beef patties that were bought frozen under the name American Chef's Selection Angus Beef Patties from three Sam's Club stores in the Twin Cities area.

More Recalls...Again...
41,305 pounds of ground beef recalled
New recall:http://foodconsumer.org/7777/8888/R...ound_beef.shtml
This on top of the new spinach recall:http://www.kesq.com/Global/story.asp?S=7007711&nav=9qrx
I shouldn't be surprised that there are more recalls in the food industry, but somehow I am always a bit taken back with each one. People in the U.S. shop everyday for their food and 'don't want to think about where it comes from' because as I've heard before: "Ignorance is bliss", or they just don't care, or they don't know what to do about it. Well for one, stop buying into the big corporate production facilities and go local. That's a start. Smaller is better although it means a little more money spent. I just don't like the way the big companies raise and process the food for America. It's not natural and there are too many people handling things and the system is just too big to have enough safeguards to protect us from contamination.
I am glad that we have the room and time to raise and grow a portion of what we eat. We don't buy eggs, bread, honey, some vegetables when the garden is good, pork, lamb, and some other meats you don't traditionally find at your local grocery chain, some fruits, never any jam since I make all of ours, soon we'll have milk and some kinds of cheese. We try and buy locally and seasonal for anything else. Keeping to the smaller local stores...

More Recalls!
When does it end really? Dog & cat food, beef, lunch meats, chicken, toothpaste, and now bread! I think it's only getting worse...
Recently I was prompted to start making our bread. I had loaned my bread machine to a friend to use. She was so excited to have it. But a couple of weeks ago I asked if perhaps I could 'borrow' it back for a week or so until I purchased a new one and she said I could have it back no problem-she'd only used it maybe once! LOL. So it sits on my counter being used almost daily. I'm not real keen on the actually baking it does, but it mixes dough just great. So in my ingredients go for Oatmeal Wheat Bread and later we have some yummy bread to eat. Plus it sure makes the house smell good!
Well this morning I hopped on the net like I usually do, after all the farm animals are fed, and I find that there has been a recall on the bread that I was buying a few weeks ago! It's been recalled for having metal shavings in the bread! Let's see: flour-check, milk-check, butter, salt, sweetner, check-check-check, oh-metal shavings-check! How in the world do metal shavings end up in bread?! So here I sit, listening to my bread machine mix more dough and thinking about the good bread that I'll be eating in a few hours. I sure wish I could share it with you!
